The Warhampton Motor Club had 85 entries in its recent fall hill climb at Springtown, Pennsylvania … an event in which sports cars race against time, accelerating up a steep, twisting grade from a standing start to a flying finish. Each car had two chances to make the 1.2 mile run, the better of its two times to stand. JIM PETRAKIS, a young auto dealer of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, made his first run up the 25% incline in 68.3161 seconds – good enough for 22nd place. But on his second run he flipped at the first turn, a sharp switchback about 500 yards from the start. He is shown, under his British-made triumph, as a contingent of the 5000 spectators rushes to assist, to look, or shoot pictures, according to their several inclinations. The event was held on a public road, for the benefit of the local fire department, with township police patrolling the course. The spill didn’t bother Petrakis. “But my wife,” he says, “with another baby on the way, she’s not so keen on my doing this any more.” Photograph by James H.
